The Sun Is More Dangerous Than You Think

Most campers think carefully about waterproofing and wind resistance when choosing a shelter — but UV protection is often overlooked entirely. That's a mistake. Prolonged UV exposure is a serious health risk, and the shelter you choose plays a significant role in how much protection you actually get. Here's what the specs mean and what to look for.

Understanding UV Radiation

The sun emits ultraviolet radiation in three bands:

  • UVA (315–400nm) — Penetrates deep into the skin, causing premature ageing and contributing to skin cancer. UVA passes through glass and many fabrics.
  • UVB (280–315nm) — The primary cause of sunburn and a major contributor to skin cancer. Partially blocked by glass but penetrates many lightweight fabrics.
  • UVC (100–280nm) — The most dangerous band, but almost entirely absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere before reaching the surface.

Both UVA and UVB reach the ground in significant quantities and must be considered when evaluating shelter protection.

What Is UPF?

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor — the standard rating system used for fabrics and outdoor shelters. It measures how effectively a fabric blocks UV radiation from reaching the skin beneath it.

UPF is calculated by measuring the amount of UV radiation that passes through a fabric sample compared to unprotected skin:

  • UPF 15–24 — Good protection. Blocks 93.3–95.9% of UV radiation.
  • UPF 25–39 — Very good protection. Blocks 96.0–97.4% of UV radiation.
  • UPF 40–50+ — Excellent protection. Blocks 97.5–98%+ of UV radiation.

A shelter rated UPF 50+ allows less than 1/50th of UV radiation to pass through — equivalent to reducing your UV exposure by 98% or more.

UPF vs. SPF: What's the Difference?

These two ratings are frequently confused:

  • SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is used for sunscreens and measures protection against UVB radiation only.
  • UPF is used for fabrics and measures protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.

UPF is the more comprehensive rating for shelter fabrics because it accounts for the full UV spectrum rather than just the sunburn-causing UVB band.

How Fabric Affects UV Protection

Not all shelter fabrics offer the same UV protection. Several factors determine how much UV a fabric blocks:

Fabric Density and Weave

Tightly woven fabrics with a high thread count block more UV than loosely woven fabrics. The smaller the gaps between fibres, the less UV passes through. This is why heavy canvas canopies typically offer better UV protection than lightweight polyester.

Fabric Colour

Darker colours absorb more UV radiation and therefore allow less to pass through to the occupant beneath. A dark navy canopy offers better UV protection than a pale yellow one of the same fabric weight. However, darker fabrics also absorb more heat — a trade-off to consider in hot climates.

Fabric Treatment

Many outdoor shelter fabrics are treated with UV-absorbing or UV-reflecting chemical finishes that significantly enhance their UPF rating. These treatments work by:

  • UV absorbers — Chemicals that absorb UV radiation and convert it to heat, preventing it from passing through the fabric
  • UV reflectors — Metallic or ceramic particles that reflect UV radiation away from the fabric surface

UV treatments can degrade over time with washing, abrasion, and prolonged sun exposure. Re-treatment products are available to restore UV protection on older fabrics.

Fabric Stretch

When a fabric is stretched, the gaps between fibres increase and UV protection decreases. A fabric rated UPF 50 in its relaxed state may offer significantly less protection when stretched taut over a frame. Quality shelter fabrics are tested under tension to account for this.

UV Protection in Different Shelter Types

Canopy Shelters

Canopy shelters are your primary defence against UV exposure at camp. Key specifications to look for:

  • UPF rating — Look for UPF 40+ as a minimum; UPF 50+ is the gold standard for serious sun protection
  • Fabric weight — Heavier fabrics (180gsm+) generally offer better UV protection than lightweight options
  • Colour — Darker canopy colours provide better UV blocking; silver/reflective undersides reduce heat build-up while maintaining protection
  • Coverage area — A larger canopy provides more shade and reduces the UV exposure of occupants at the edges

Inflatable Tents

Tent fabrics vary significantly in their UV protection characteristics:

  • The outer flysheet is your primary UV barrier — check its UPF rating if sun protection is a priority
  • Most quality tent flysheets offer UPF 30–50+ protection when new
  • UV protection degrades with age and sun exposure — older tents may offer significantly less protection than their original rating
  • Light-coloured tents reflect more heat but may offer less UV protection than darker equivalents

The Reflection Factor: Ground and Surroundings

UV exposure under a shelter isn't just about what comes directly from above. Reflected UV from surrounding surfaces can be significant:

  • Sand and light-coloured ground — Reflects up to 25% of UV radiation, increasing exposure under open-sided shelters
  • Water — Reflects up to 25% of UV, making beach and lakeside camping higher-risk environments
  • Snow — Reflects up to 80% of UV — the highest reflection surface. Winter and high-altitude camping require serious UV protection even in cold conditions.
  • Grass and soil — Reflect only 2–5% of UV, making standard campsites lower-risk environments

For beach, lakeside, or snow camping, sidewall panels on your canopy shelter significantly reduce reflected UV exposure from the sides.

Practical UV Protection at Camp

Even with a high-UPF shelter, a layered approach to UV protection is best practice:

  • Position your canopy shelter to maximise shade during peak UV hours (10am–2pm)
  • Use sidewall panels to block low-angle UV in the morning and evening
  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to exposed skin, even under a canopy
  • Wear UV-protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat when outside the shelter
  • Be aware that UV intensity increases with altitude — UV exposure increases approximately 10–12% for every 1,000m of elevation gain

What to Look for When Buying

When evaluating outdoor shelters for UV protection, ask these questions:

  • Does the product have a stated UPF rating? (If not, assume minimal protection)
  • Is the UPF rating independently tested or self-certified?
  • What is the fabric weight and construction?
  • Does the canopy include a UV-reflective or UV-absorbing treatment?
  • Are sidewall panels available to block low-angle UV?
